How My Fur Balls Saved Me In Every Way

There was a time when I just felt lonely & alone. I differentiate because the two are not the same. How do I know - I don't feel lonely anymore.

Take me back 6 years. A single mum in a big new house I'd bought for my daughter and I. At 37 I was still thinking, maybe if i meet someone amazing I could fill it more. What the empty space just led to was a feeling of inadequacy, failure and being alone & lonley. Because I had created this white picket fence but my daughter was sometimes off with her dad so I was rattling around in the walls I worked my butt off for only to feel like I had failed.

4 weeks in and I sat on the top deck overlooking the landscape, my thoughts spiraling: "Am I good enough? Does anyone truly see value in what I do, or am I just fooling everyone?" Just then, a cold nose nudged my hand, and a pair of trusting eyes looked up at me—my GSP, Bella. Her simple gesture, seeking a pat or maybe just offering her presence, brought a moment of comfort and grounding. It made me wonder: How could this straightforward act cut through the chaos of my self-doubt? This fur ball of (way too much puppy power packed into legs too long for her body) connect with me, without words in a way I felt comforted.

Imposter syndrome, with its deep-seated negative beliefs, often convinces us we're less than we are. Today, I want to share not just the struggles with these inner critics but also the everyday actions and, notably, the remarkable role dogs have played in my journey toward healing and self-acceptance. Yes - Now I have 2 Crazies Bella & her brother Kobe (featured above).

Exploring Negative Beliefs

Negative beliefs are like unwanted guests in our minds. They come from various sources: perhaps a passing comment from a high school teacher, the unrealistic standards portrayed in media, or even our interpretations of family expectations. These beliefs stick, telling us we're not good enough, smart enough, or just enough.

For me, these voices became a chorus that was hard to silence & even louder when sat in it. They made every success feel unearned and every failure a confirmation of my deepest fears. Reflecting on these patterns, I began to see how pervasive and damaging they could be.

Everyday Healing Practices

Healing begins with recognition and is nurtured through daily practices. Mindfulness meditation has been a cornerstone of my healing, teaching me to observe these negative thoughts without judgment. Journaling is another powerful tool, helping me articulate and confront these intrusive thoughts. But the biggest healer has been my fur babies. They show up seemingly knowing when you need their presence, they force a cuddle when you don't even know you need one. They have let me cry, make me smile, keep me exercised and are always there by my side.

Having them in my space, following me from room to room, snoring currently on the day beds in my home office while I write - makes me feel connected. Literally, like there is an energy force being pulled to me, giving to me and just feeling connected. Alone, sure we all are at times but lonely - never anymore.

The Role of Dogs in Healing

Dogs have an uncanny ability to live in the moment—unworried about the past or anxious about the future. Observing and interacting with my two has taught me to appreciate the present more. Studies have shown that the mere act of petting a dog can reduce cortisol, the stress hormone, and boost oxytocin, known as the love hormone.

Kobe is my 'love bug', he just gives love and friendship. He is a bundle of tail wags and presence. Bella's intuitive senses are uncanny. She seems to pinpoint how I am feeling before I am and can stand in stillness for hours comforting during my low moments, their joy during our walks, and calm presence at home help alleviate the isolation that imposter syndrome often brings. They don't care about the voices in my head; they cares about the here and now, reminding me to do the same.

So I did some research to see if this was just me being me or, there actually was a scientific connection to the healing power of dogs. Here is what I found:

Dogs possess an innate ability to offer comfort and companionship that goes beyond simple pet-owner relationships. Scientifically, their presence can have profound effects on human health, particularly in managing anxiety and healing the central nervous system.

  1. Reducing Anxiety and Stress: Studies have shown that interacting with dogs can lead to decreased levels of cortisol, the body's main stress hormone. A 2019 study published in the journal "Affective Disorders" reported that participants who spent just 10 minutes interacting with cats and dogs had significantly reduced cortisol levels, suggesting a quick and effective way to reduce stress.

  2. Impact on the Central Nervous System (CNS): Interaction with dogs has also been linked to the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine—chemicals in the brain that are associated with happiness and tranquility. This biochemical link can help stabilize and improve CNS function, making us feel more peaceful and relaxed.

  3. Improving Heart Rate and Blood Pressure: According to the American Heart Association, pet ownership, particularly dog ownership, is associated with a lower risk of heart disease. This connection is attributed to pets' ability to help lower blood pressure and heart rate during stressful situations.

  4. Enhancing Social Support and Reducing Loneliness: Dogs also provide significant social support, which is crucial for mental health. A 2020 study published in the "Journal of Psychiatric Research" found that pet owners were less likely to suffer from depression than those without pets during times of high stress such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The study highlighted how pets could act as a buffer against psychological stress by providing emotional support, thus aiding overall mental wellness and resilience.

Integrating Dogs into Daily Recovery

Incorporating time with your dog into daily routines can significantly bolster mental health. Regular walks not only increase physical health but also provide a routine that brings stability. Training sessions build communication and deepen trust between you and your pet, reinforcing a sense of capability and achievement.

Even quiet moments of companionship, where you're simply sharing space with a faithful friend, can be profoundly soothing. These aren't just pleasant times—they're stepping stones to better mental health.

From the depths of self-doubt to moments of quiet realization in a park with my dog, this journey against imposter syndrome is ongoing. Each step, whether a mindful breath or a long off leash run is a step towards not just coping, but thriving.

If you're grappling with similar feelings, consider this: perhaps what we need is not an elaborate solution but simple, consistent actions and the unconditional love of our pets. Let's walk this path together, with our four-legged friends by our side, towards a future where we embrace our imperfections and celebrate our genuine selves. Don't have a dog, sure you know someone who does - see if you can take them for a walk ...
