Chromotherapy: Harnessing the Healing Power of Color
So it's most known by the title of Red Light or Infrared Light but the technical name for what you are undergoing when using any light therapy product or service is Chromotherapy and it goes way back into the ages as being a known healing application.
Chromotherapy, also known as color therapy, is a powerful and holistic means of promoting physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. This ancient practice, with roots in the traditions of Egyptians, Greeks, and Chinese, isn't just about playing with all the colors in the rainbow. It’s about learning and leveraging how colors connect to physical wellbeing, energy meridians, and overall health.
Naturally based on popularity and largely the 'cool factor' presented by our social influencers Infrared Saunas have really become what we understand as the main application of this form of healing but there is a lot more to it than just sitting in a trendy sauna.
Let’s delve into how chromotherapy works, explore its benefits, and discover how you can integrate it into your life, especially through red light saunas.
A Brief History of Chromotherapy
Chromotherapy has been around for centuries. Ancient cultures, like the Egyptians, Greeks, and Chinese, recognized the therapeutic benefits of colors. The practice gained renewed popularity in the 19th century in Europe and America when practitioners began using colored glass to treat various health conditions. This resurgence was based on the idea that different colors could influence our mood, energy levels, and overall health.
How Does Chromotherapy Work?
The principle behind chromotherapy is that every color has a unique vibration and frequency, which can affect our body and mind in different ways. Each color corresponds to a specific chakra, or energy center, in our body. By using the appropriate color, we can stimulate and balance these chakras, promoting healing and wellbeing.
Red: Increases circulation, stimulates energy, and invigorates the mind.
Blue: Reduces stress, calms the mind, and helps with sleep and relaxation.
Green: Balances emotions, promotes calmness, and rejuvenates the body.
Yellow: Enhances mood, boosts energy, and stimulates mental clarity.
Orange: Encourages creativity, vitality, and enthusiasm.
Purple: Stimulates intuition and spiritual awareness.

My Experience with Red Light Saunas
As someone who regularly uses red light saunas, I've experienced firsthand the incredible benefits of this form of chromotherapy. I started infrared because of joint pain from old sporting injuries and I wanted something whole body and 'warming'. So I started my practice in the local infrared of the health centre where I had to book my sessions to see if it was something I could see myself committing to and without question, within 3 weeks I had my own one man sauna in the living room. Why, because it made an immediate difference and not just to my joints to my mental health!
Red light therapy involves exposing the body to low-wavelength red light. This light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the cells, promoting various healing processes.
Benefits of Red Light Saunas:
Improved Circulation: Red light helps dilate blood vessels and improve blood flow, which can enhance oxygen and nutrient delivery to tissues.
Pain Relief: The anti-inflammatory properties of red light can reduce pain and inflammation, making it beneficial for conditions like arthritis and muscle soreness.
Enhanced Recovery: Athletes and fitness enthusiasts use red light therapy to speed up recovery and reduce muscle fatigue after intense workouts.
Skin Health: Red light stimulates collagen production, which can reduce wrinkles, scars, and other skin issues. It also promotes wound healing and can be beneficial for skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.
Mood Enhancement: Exposure to red light can boost the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood and can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.
In short I feel the difference so I use it but I have also let it filter further into my life as I started digging deeper into colour therapy for all areas of my wellbeing and found it can be put into play in so many other ways. Research has shown that red light therapy can reduce inflammation and pain, improve skin health, and enhance athletic performance. Blue light therapy has been found to help with mood disorders and improve sleep quality. Green light is known for its calming effects and can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.
Integrating Chromotherapy into Your Life
Chromotherapy isn't limited to light therapy. Everyday products and practices can also harness the power of color for healing. Here are some simple ways to incorporate chromotherapy into your daily routine:
Everyday Products Utilizing Chromotherapy
Bath Bombs: Colored bath bombs can transform your bathing experience into a healing ritual. For instance, a blue bath bomb can help you unwind and de-stress, while a red one can invigorate and energize.
Fresh Linen: Switching to bed sheets and pillowcases in calming colors like blue or green can enhance your sleep quality. I am obsessed with The Sheet Society for this very reason. They have the softest, perfectly fitting bedroom sets in the most stunning pastel colours fitting all areas of moods. I am not kidding in saing I change my sheets 3 times a week because i love fresh clean linen and the colours are my driving force!
Throw Pillows: Adding colorful throw pillows to your living space can help set the mood and influence your emotional state.
Clothing: Wearing clothes in colors that resonate with you can boost your mood and energy levels. A green jumper might promote a sense of calm and balance, while a yellow one can brighten your day and stimulate creativity.

The main feature now is the Sauna which sits downstairs and has become my sanctuary. Something about the wood smell, the warm lights and the me time makes it a great escape all the while knowing I am healing inside and out. Plus - it is just for me and no the dogs cannot come in and Poppy doesn't fit at the same time as I do! On that note it is awesome for my tiny dancer as well. She gets sore joints with her 15 hours of dance a week while her body is till growing and this is one of our core healing routines for her.
